How to Check Maximum Electricity Consuming Appliances or Technology at Home.
We use multiple appliances and technology at home for comfort and ease of life. All of them are not used for maximum hours. There are selective appliances used and they cost us to pay more electricity bills. Even we are not aware of where we are using more electricity and increasing monthly bills and reducing our savings. To simplify this I had made a calculation and steps to follow to know where we consume more electricity.
Electricity what we consume is measured in kWh which is called per unit electricity consumption mentioned in our electricity bills.
Step 1- Calculate Average Per Unit Electricity Consumption.
Take electricity bills for the last 3 months or if possible the last 6 months. Take an average of per unit electricity consumption of those months.
Average unit consumed per month = (Month 1+ Month 2 +.....+ Month n)/ Number of months (n)
Step 2 - Calculate electricity consumed by household appliances
We are considering the basic appliances used at home are as follows:1. Fan
2. Light
3. Refrigerator
4. Washing Machine
5. Air Conditioner
Make following table:
Appliances | Wattage | Hours of operation per day | Number of days per month | % Unit Consumption |
Fan | ||||
Light | ||||
Refrigerator | ||||
Washing Machine | ||||
Air Conditioner |
Calculate the unit consumed by Appliances:
1. Fan
Check the Specifications written on the fan either it is a ceiling fan or table fan. The power of the fan is mentioned in Watt.
The Formula of unit electric energy consumption per month by fan are as follows:
Unit Electric Energy Consumed (kWh) per Month by Fan
= (Power of Fan (in Watt) X Fan operated ( in Hours) X Number of Days in a Month )/ 1000
Hence, compare it with your average unit consumed per month from step 1 and check what is the total percentage of the Fan unit on your electricity bill.
% Fan unit consumption
= ( Unit consumption by Fan per month) X 100/ (average unit consumed per month.)
2. Light
Check the wattage of the lamp or tube light written on it. If on tube light it is written F20T12 or F32T8 then lamp technology is fluorescent and wattage is 20W and 32W respectively. Otherwise,the Power of the light is mentioned in Wattage.
To calculate Electricity Energy Consumed, multiply wattage with hours of operations in a day and number of days in a month.
Unit Electric Energy Consumed (kWh) per month by Light
= (Power Consumed by light ( in Watt) X light operated (in Hours) X Number of days in the month)/1000
Calculate the percentage of light unit consumption compare to the average unit consumed per month.
% Light unit consumption
= (Unit consumption by light per month) X 100 / (average unit consumed per month.)
3. Refrigerator

Energy consumption of refrigerator is given in kWh/Year. why? because of compressor it does not consumes complete load i.e not on 100% load for all time. Majority of hours it consumes a 70-80% load.
Unit Electric Energy Consumed (kWh) per month by Refrigerator
= ( kWh/ Year) /12
This is the direct method to calculate the per month unit electric energy consumption but most probably this will not be the exact value.
Calculate the percentage of Refrigerator unit consumption in your home appliances
% Refrigerator unit consumption
= (Unit Electric Energy Consumed (kWh) per month by Refrigerator ) X 100 /(average unit consumed per month.)
4. Washing Machine
Check the Power (in Watt) written on the Washing machine. Energy Consumption of Washing Machine can be calculated by multiplying wattage of the washing machine with the time of operating hours and Number of days in a month.
Unit Electric Energy Consumed (kWh) per month by Washing Machine
= (Power of the washing machine (in Watt) X Operating time ( in Hours) X Number of days in a month.)/1000
Calculate the % Washing Machine unit consumption comparing Unit Electric Energy Consumed (kWh) per month by Washing Machine with Average unit consumed per month.
% Washing Machine unit consumption
= ( Unit Electric Energy Consumed (kWh) per month by Washing Machine) X 100/(Average unit consumed per month.)
5. Air Conditioner.
Check the wattage of the Air Conditioner given on the appliances. Calculate Unit Electric Energy Consumed (kWh) per month by Air Conditioner by multiplying wattage with operating hours per day and number of days per month.
Unit Electric Energy Consumed (kWh) per month by Air Conditioner
= (Power of the Air Conditioner (in Watt) X Operating time ( in Hours) X Number of days in a month.)/1000
Calculate the % Air Conditioner unit consumption comparing Unit Electric Energy Consumed (kWh) per month by Air Conditioner with the Average unit consumed per month.
% Air Conditioner unit consumption
= ( Unit Electric Energy Consumed (kWh) per month by Air Conditioner) X 100/(Average unit consumed per month.)
Is it your Table got filled? Check the Maximum percentage of units consumed by which appliances and least consumption of unit by which appliances.
Maximum electricity consuming appliances are not only direct link with the wattage of the appliances but also for how many hours they are operated in a day.
